Relationships go through seasons. Some seasons are warm and connected; others feel cold, distant, or like you're trapped in the same argument on an endless loop. If you're searching for couples therapy in Nanaimo, you've probably been in one of those harder seasons for a while — and something in you is saying it's time to try something different.
I'm Mohamad Shabib, a Gottman-trained couples therapist based in Nanaimo offering virtual couples counselling to couples across Vancouver Island and British Columbia. I want to walk you through what couples therapy can actually look like — because for most people, the hardest part isn't deciding to go. It's not knowing what to expect once you get there.
Nanaimo is a community in transition. The cost of living, housing stress, healthcare pressures, and the shift toward remote work have all created new strains on relationships that didn't exist a few years ago. Add in the residue of the pandemic years — the isolation, the proximity, the loss of routine — and many couples find themselves in unfamiliar territory: they love each other, but they've drifted.
Some of the most common reasons Nanaimo couples seek counselling include:
None of these are signs that your relationship is beyond repair. They're signs that it needs tending — and that's exactly what couples therapy is for.
Not all couples therapy is the same. The Gottman Method, developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman at the University of Washington, is built on more than 40 years of research with thousands of couples. It's one of the most evidence-based approaches to relationship therapy available — and it's specific about what it's trying to do.
The Gottman research identified four communication patterns that predict relationship breakdown with remarkable accuracy. They called them the Four Horsemen: criticism (attacking your partner's character rather than a specific behavior), contempt (the single strongest predictor of relationship failure — speaking with mockery or disrespect), defensiveness (deflecting responsibility and counter-attacking), and stonewalling (shutting down and withdrawing entirely).
In Gottman therapy, we identify which of these patterns are showing up in your relationship and replace them with something better. It's not about making conflict disappear — conflict is normal and, when handled well, actually healthy. It's about changing how you fight, and strengthening the friendship and fondness underneath everything else.
In our first session, I'm not going to take sides or tell you who's right. My role is to understand the dynamic between you — the patterns that keep repeating — and to help you both feel heard before we do anything else.
In Gottman-based work, we typically start with an assessment: a joint session, individual sessions with each partner, and then a feedback session where I share what I've noticed and we build a plan together. From there, sessions focus on specific skills — how to raise difficult topics without triggering defensiveness, how to repair after a fight, how to rebuild trust, how to stay emotionally connected even when life gets hard.
The American Psychological Association recognizes that couples therapy is most effective when it's structured and evidence-based — which is precisely what the Gottman Method offers. Sessions typically run 50–60 minutes and are available evenings and weekends to work around your schedules.
All sessions at TEO Counselling are virtual — and for couples, this often turns out to be more convenient than it sounds. Both partners can join from home, there's no commute or parking to negotiate, and you can attend from the comfort of your own space. Research consistently shows that virtual couples therapy produces outcomes equivalent to in-person sessions.
For couples where one or both partners work irregular hours, have children at home, or live in areas of Nanaimo where getting to an office is a barrier — virtual therapy removes a lot of the friction that stops people from getting started.
At TEO Counselling, couples sessions are priced at $175/hour. We also offer:
We accept e-transfer and credit card. If you're not sure about your insurance coverage, we're happy to help you figure that out during your free consultation.
You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from couples therapy. Some couples come when things have reached a breaking point. Others come because they can feel themselves drifting and want to do something about it before it becomes a crisis. Both are valid. Both are the right time.
What matters most is that at least one of you believes the relationship is worth the effort. That belief, combined with the right support, is often enough to change direction.
If you're in Nanaimo or anywhere on Vancouver Island and you're ready to have a real conversation about what's been happening, we're here. The first conversation is free. No judgment, no pressure — just a chance to talk about what's possible.
Book a free, no-pressure consultation. We'll talk about what you're going through and figure out together if we're the right fit.
