Reaching out for help with addiction takes courage — and it often comes only after months or years of trying everything else first. If you're searching for addiction counselling in Nanaimo or anywhere in BC, I want you to know something before we go any further: needing support with substance use or addictive behaviour doesn't mean you're weak. It means you're human, and that you've been carrying something very heavy, often for a very long time.
One of the most important things I've learned in my work with addictions — first at Edgewood's concurrent disorders program in Nanaimo, and in private practice since — is that substance use and addictive behaviours rarely exist in isolation. They are almost always connected to something else: unprocessed trauma, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, grief, or a nervous system that never learned to self-regulate without help.
According to SAMHSA research, more than half of people with substance use disorders also have a co-occurring mental health condition. That's not a coincidence. It's a signal about what the addiction is doing — and what effective treatment needs to address.
Effective addiction counselling doesn't just focus on stopping the behaviour. It asks: what was this behaviour doing for you? What need was it meeting? And how can we meet that need in a way that doesn't cost you so much?
At TEO Counselling, addiction support is integrated — meaning we work with the addiction and the underlying experiences together. Depending on what brings you in, this might involve:
All sessions are virtual, which means you can access this support from your home in Nanaimo, Victoria, Vancouver, or anywhere in BC — without having to navigate transportation, childcare, or the stigma that sometimes comes with walking into a treatment centre.
There's a damaging myth that you have to lose everything before treatment is "justified." That myth keeps people in pain for years longer than they need to be. Whether you're just starting to notice a pattern that worries you, actively struggling, or somewhere in between — support is available now, and it can help now.
The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association recognizes addictions counselling as a specialized field requiring both clinical training and lived-experience sensitivity. Mohamad Shabib holds a Certified Addictions Counsellor designation through the CACCF in addition to his CCC credential — meaning he brings specific, validated training to this work, not just general therapy skills applied to addiction.
