Online couples counselling in Ontario, in plain terms

Couples counselling is the two of you and one counsellor, an hour at a time, looking at the pattern between you rather than ruling on the last argument. For couples in Ontario it runs online, so partners in Thunder Bay, Kingston or Windsor book the same appointment, with the same counsellor, as partners in Toronto. Zoom or Google Meet is the backup if Jane has trouble, and you can share one screen or join from two.

This page covers the Ontario practicalities: booking, cost, OHIP and extended health, and how the first sessions go. What couples counselling involves in general is on the couples therapy and marriage counselling page, and how the Gottman Method shapes the work is on the Gottman Method page. Engaged or newly married couples may want the premarital counselling page; couples deciding whether to stay together, or how to separate well, the separation and divorce counselling page. How booking and fees work in Ontario

The first step is a free 15-minute consultation with Mohamad, on a video call or a scheduled phone call, where you describe what is going on and check fit. Either partner can book it, and both can join; no referral is needed. A couples session after that is $175 for 60 minutes and an individual session $150, paid per session, with no intake fee. If you live in the part of northwestern Ontario that keeps Central time, appointment times are 2:00 pm to 11:00 pm on your clock. OHIP and extended-health questions are answered below.

Who you would be working with

Mohamad Shabib is TEO's counsellor for couples in Ontario. His Ontario registration, his Gottman training and the languages he works in are set out in the questions below and on his profile page.

What the first sessions look like

The first couples session is a joint conversation in which each of you describes the relationship as you live it: what brought you in, how disagreements tend to run, and what you would each like to be different. Nobody is asked to replay the worst fight in detail. An assessment phase follows, which can include a brief individual conversation with each partner, and then a plan for what the two of you will work on. You can stop at any point; there is no package and no minimum.

Before you book together

Joint sessions are not the right first step if one partner is being hurt, threatened or controlled by the other. If that is happening, individual support comes first: book the free consultation for yourself alone and say so. If anyone is in danger now, call 911.

Common questions

How much does online couples counselling cost in Ontario?

A 60-minute couples session at TEO is $175, paid per session through Jane, with no intake fee; individual sessions are $150 and the 15-minute consultation is free. You receive an insurance-ready receipt after every session.

Who would we be working with?

Mohamad Shabib, MACP, CCC, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO #14298). As a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) he practises with clinical supervision. He has completed Level 1 and Level 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and works in English or Arabic. He is TEO's counsellor for couples in Ontario.

Can we join from two different cities?

Yes. Each of you can join the same session from your own device, so a partner working in Ottawa and a partner at home in Thunder Bay can book one appointment together. You each need a private room and a steady connection; headphones help. If either of you lives outside Ontario, mention it when you book, because it affects whether and how TEO can see you.

Is couples counselling covered by OHIP or insurance in Ontario?

OHIP does not cover counselling or psychotherapy in private practice, for couples or individuals. An extended-health plan may reimburse part of the fee; plans differ on whether they include a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and on whether they cover a shared session, so ask your insurer first, and if you each have a plan, ask both. Direct billing is available with Mohamad for Pacific Blue Cross and TELUS eClaims plans such as Canada Life and Manulife, and you receive an insurance-ready receipt after every session.

What times are available in Ontario?

Sessions run 3:00 pm to midnight Eastern, seven days a week, because the practice works on Pacific time (12:00 pm to 9:00 pm). Evening and weekend appointments are ordinary, not special arrangements. Mornings are not available.

Is this only for married couples?

No. Common-law, engaged, dating, living together or apart, a first marriage or a second: all of it is couples counselling here, at the same $175 rate. Engaged couples may also find the premarital counselling page useful.
