If your relationship feels stuck — the same arguments cycling through, the distance quietly growing, or something important that broke and hasn't fully healed — couples counselling can offer something that's hard to find on your own: a skilled, neutral space where both of you can be heard, and where the actual patterns between you can finally change.
I'm Mohamad Shabib, MACP, CCC — a Gottman Level 1 and Level 2 trained therapist at TEO Counselling. We work with couples across British Columbia, including throughout the Okanagan. This guide explains what couples counselling actually involves, how the Gottman Method works, and what to look for when choosing a couples therapist in or near Kelowna.
Research from the Gottman Institute shows that couples wait an average of six years after problems first develop before seeking professional support. By that point, resentment may have built up — and patterns that were once flexible may have hardened. Reaching out earlier can make the work more straightforward.
That said, there is no wrong time to start. Couples counselling can help whether you're:
Your first session isn't about solving everything on day one. It's about understanding the dynamic between you — the cycles you get pulled into, what each of you needs, and where the real friction lives beneath the surface arguments.
In Gottman Method therapy, we begin with an assessment: a joint session, followed by individual sessions with each partner, and then a feedback session where I share what I've observed and we build a direction together. From there, sessions focus on practical skill-building — how to communicate without escalating, how to repair after a rupture, how to rebuild trust, and how to deepen the friendship and intimacy that can erode when things get hard.
A couples therapist doesn't take sides. My job isn't to decide who's right — it's to understand the patterns between you and help you both change them. That means both partners need to be willing to look at their own role in what's happening. That willingness, even when it's imperfect and uncomfortable, is what makes the work move.
The Gottman Method is built on over 40 years of research studying what actually separates couples who thrive from those who don't. The research, conducted at the University of Washington, found that successful relationships aren't conflict-free — they're relationships where partners have learned to repair, reconnect, and turn toward each other even when things are hard.
One of the most valuable concepts in Gottman therapy is the Four Horsemen — four communication patterns that, when left unchecked, steadily erode a relationship:
Recognizing these patterns in your relationship isn't a condemnation — it's a starting point. In therapy, we identify which horsemen are showing up and systematically build the antidotes: gentler communication, more repair attempts, shared responsibility, and the ability to self-soothe before returning to hard conversations.
It depends on where you're starting and what you're working on. How long couples work takes depends on what you are working through and where you are starting from. We give you a realistic sense of scope after the assessment rather than committing you to a number in advance. Couples dealing with deeper ruptures — infidelity, years of accumulated resentment, or significant trust damage — may need more time. Sessions can start weekly or every other week, and frequency is reviewed with you as new patterns take hold.
The goal isn't to be in therapy indefinitely. It's to give you the tools and understanding to navigate your relationship on your own — and to know that professional support is available if you hit a rough patch down the road.
Virtual couples counselling is well established. Research comparing video-delivered therapy with in-person treatment, including a 2021 meta-analysis in Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy, has found comparable outcomes, and couples work translates to the format. In many ways, the virtual format makes it easier: no coordinating two work schedules around a shared commute, no awkward waiting rooms, and the ability to attend from wherever both partners feel comfortable.
TEO Counselling works with couples across British Columbia — including Kelowna, West Kelowna, Penticton, Vernon, Kamloops, and throughout the Okanagan. Sessions are available seven days a week, noon to 9 pm Pacific — evenings and weekends included — because couples who both work during the day need flexibility that fits real life.
At TEO Counselling, couples sessions are:
Some extended health plans cover couples counselling when it's provided by a CCC or RCC. Coverage varies by provider, so it's worth checking your plan directly. We're happy to provide receipts in a format your insurer will accept.
Reaching out for couples counselling isn't a sign that your relationship has failed. It's a sign that you're not willing to let it. The Gottman research shows that couples who seek help — even late in the process — can rebuild what feels broken, when both partners are genuinely willing to do the work.
